What is Acupuncture ?

Acupuncture Practitioners at Ruscombe

Classical Five Element Acupuncture is one of the oldest forms of healing known to mankind, dating back to ancient China nearly 5000 years ago. Five Element Acupuncture was first recorded in what is called the Nei Ching, or the Yellow Emperor's Classic of Internal Medicine. Today, the Nei Ching is still the foundation of all Chinese Medicine.

Acupuncture treatment assists nature in healing by balancing Qi (pronounced chee) energy. Qi is the vital energy that flows throughout the body within fourteen special pathways called meridians. Each meridian supplies Qi for specific organs and functions. Too little or too much energy in a pathway will create an imbalance in this system and eventually lead to dysfunction in the body, mind or spirit.

Extensive practice and Chinese research has shown acupuncture's effectiveness in helping with these and many other conditions.

Do the Acupuncture Needles Hurt ?
The needles used in acupuncture treatment have no resemblance to hypodermic syringes. Acupuncture needles are very slender, barely beyond the thickness of a human hair. The finest quality stainless steel, presterilized, disposable needles are used. Most insertions are just beneath the skin's surface and the sensations felt vary from person to person. Sometimes a person feels a momentary pain or sting.

How Will I Respond
To Acupuncture Treatment ?

Reactions to treatment vary from person to person. Some people will not see improvement in their main complaint right away, but rather a change in their overall state of well-being. Others will see improvement in their main complaint sooner. Still others may experience a slight intensification of a particular symptom, prior to the symptom disappearing. Sometimes changes are obvious, and sometimes they are more subtle. Generally speaking, increased severity and duration of symptoms will increase the length of time needed to treat the problem.

People frequently notice improved sleep, increased relaxation, changes in appetite and bowel patterns, or an improved body temperature. These are all positive signs of a better energy balance, which if continued and supported, will lead to an alleviation of the major symptoms. Because body, mind and spirit are affected by acupuncture treatment, your acupuncturists will spend a portion of each visit monitoring these changes.
